Hand Job
This fun pun of a title is borrowed from an article written by my friend, Marylou Malig, sister of my BFF cum twin Sue Ann, and former contributor of Entrepreneur Philippines. It was an article about hobbies that turn profitable, and as the title might imply, it was about my hobby, "the art of beautiful handwriting" known as calligraphy.Yes, once upon a time, I did calligraphy, first as a hobby or only for weddings of family and close friends...
then later on, because of gentle encouragement and prodding of friends, I started doing it professionally, accepting jobs to address envelopes by hand and even do fully calligraphed invitations.
Although I was busy with my first publishing business back then, and with my two growing boys, the calligraphy work was therapeutic and became my "me time" at home. As soon as the kids were asleep and Gary and I were winding down our days, I would bring out paper, pens and ink, lay down my tools out on my dining table and just find my peace in the rhythm and strokes of my pen, watching ink flowing from the nibs on to the texture of paper. It was also a fun way to earn extra cash. I remember one major calligraphy job earned me enough to buy us a new sofa.Sadly, I injured my wrist some years ago, and had to take a break from doing the calligraphy work I loved so much. My nibs have been packed away for many years now and it is a joy to hear about new calligraphers actively promoting the craft. I love seeing their works on instagram and tumblr. One of those I follow is Alexis Ventura of Ink Scribbler.I found Alexis on instagram first when I was working on the 2nd Mompreneur Summit whose theme was Passion & Purpose. Calligraphy is a beautiful art. People say it is a lost art that is about to be obsolete. I disagree! Everyone's going back to basics. With the handmade revolution that's currently gaining popularity, calligraphy is a timeless craft. Even if I haven't touched my pens in a while, I know someday I will get back to it again albeit just as a hobby and personal art.If you are like me and love ink and paper, get obsessed with font styles, if you get mesmerized by seeing written letters of paper and ink, perhaps you might want to join the next workshop of Alexis and join her class.
